5 Podcast Strategies for Landing Speaking Opportunities | Ep 97
Have you ever been to an industry event a conference and secretly thought to yourself “I wish that was me up there?”
If you have an urge to communicate a message, teach something, did you know that your podcast could be a tool to help you become a speaker?
In this episode we discuss:
Recap of the Empowered Podcasting Conference
How can your podcast help you land speaking opportunities
I just came back from Empowered Podcasting’s 1st edition of the conference and first of all I want to say a huge congrats to Marc Ronick who is one of the co-founders of the conference along side many more creators and entrepreneurs who worked so hard to make it happen. For such a fun and welcoming event, and also for the opportunity to be one of their speakers.
We started the day with an intension setting session with Johny Giangregorio where he guided us in a visualization that would help us answer one single question; What was your ONE THING that needs to happen today to help you move forward with your podcast.
My immediate thought was connections, meaningful connections, and because I was speaking, I also wanted to have a successful presentation.
Another question was what might be obstacles that might prevent it and what do you need to do to avoid that.
Stepping outside my comfort zone and getting inside my head came to mind because it had been my first conference since before the pandemic and first one within this new industry I am now in.
In past years, I had the chance to go to several photography conferences and would have a blast. I went for work purposes as I was working for another photographer and we would record MANY interviews in 2 days time maybe 15 was the most we did It was so fun. And while I have done other speaking engagements before on photography and in Spanish, this was my first one in English and as podcaster.
I’m happy to say that I succeeded.
Presentation went well and I met so many great creators and several of them local to the Raleigh Durham area and NC which made me more exited about doing more local things.
For my presentation, I talked about YouTube strategies for podcasters which you can checkout in the link in the description.
It was so great connecting with other creators, seeing their presentations and even the process of preparing for my own.
In preparing, I had the help of my friend and fellow podcaster Ana Xavier from The Podcast Space who was also a speaker. We did a few rounds of presenting our content and sharing our feedback to help each other out. The collaborative process was truly fun and I highly recommend it. It’s also a testament to finding your people, supporting and cheering for each other. THAT RIGHT THERE WAS ONE OF MY BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS from the experience. That sense of creative camaraderie where there isn’t any gatekeeping but a true sense of wanting to see each other be successful, because we know there is space for everyone, there is space for you.
So how can your podcast help you get speaking engagements?
Be Clear on who your audience is and Leverage Your Podcast Content
Create and share episodes that showcase your expertise to include evergreen content.
Network and Collaborate
Appear as a guest on other podcasts to expand your reach and practice your speaking skills. Let’s get visible!
Attend industry events and connect with potential event organizers.
Research Opportunities
Research speaking opportunities such as conferences, seminars, workshops, or online events and tailor your pitch to each event. Make a document and include links to those events and jot down important deadlines so you know when to apply.
Tailor Your Proposals
Include a media kit with your speaker bio, a potential talk description, and key takeaways for your talk.
And the most important one, is to actually pitch yourself to speak, submit the application, send that email, contact that person, take action.
As I was preparing my presentation, I wrote an affirmation on a big post-it and I read it the morning of the presentation and a few minutes before it and I’ll share it with you.
I AM CONFIDENT, CAPABLE AND WORTHY and because I’m Puerto Rican, I added a bit of sofrito to it and end it with ¡Dale que tu puedes! which means YOU GOT THIS!
